McMaster Raises Scrutiny

So gas prices are starting to drop in South Carolina.  They still are outrageous, but not as much as they were last week.  Why?

Seems to us the only thing that has changed is Attorney General Henry McMaster’s investigation of price gouging.  He is issuing subpoenas and taking calls and emails from consumers.  Maybe a good dose of legal oversight scared the heck out of oil marketers and convenience store owners, many of whom are a bit shady anyway.

What’s impressive is that McMaster is not using demagoguery to appeal to voters’ emotional instincts, a trick some of his predecessors mastered.  He’s being very measured and careful about what he says and does, as his quotes from our friends at the Palmetto Scoop indicate.

Good job.
